Website Page Ranks are not a one time rank. They keep changing over time. Though most of the time websites have a trend to go higher up on the page rank, it is also common for websites & blogs to see a drop in their page ranks.
We shall also share opinions on how to influence a good page rank & the tips on some of the mistakes that could keep your blog or website’s page rank low.
The first thing is to find out the Page Rank. Google has a free toolbar that gives the Page Rank of any of the web pages. The picture below shows that Google Home Page has a rank of 7/10.

Whats the benefit of a high page rank ? In simple basic layman’s terms, a higher page rank indicates a reputable website that contains good information. So any website or blog that is around for a while & contains authentic information will get a good rank.
A high page rank does not necessarily mean the web pages are going to show up on more searches. In order for a page to show up on more search results, you need to have a proper diversified content with appropriate keywords .
A good page rank means that your website is still in the Google’s index at a particular time & that is meets all the criteria of a good website .
This basically takes us to the point essential for new bloggers & new webmasters on what to keep in mind to create a good, Google friendly website:
- authentic website content – Google gives high importance to web pages that are not just replica of better ones. Google search engine favors websites that contains authentic material.
- unrelated to black listed content – Google suggests that general websites are not linked to any website that are listed as risky or spamming websites. This also includes websites that have adult content, although Google does rank adult & pornographic websites as well.
- do not show paid links – Google penalizes websites that get paid for writing about websites. Such paid writings contain links to the website of the company that is paying you money to write about them. Since such acts increases the number of incoming links for the paying company, Google is likely to rank them higher.
But on the other hand, that goes against Google’s (or any of the other search engines like Yahoo! , Ask or MSN Live ) principle of showing most closely related authentic websites on searches. So Google penalizes websites that publish content with paid links.
In case you are publishing such reviews, do let Google know of the particular page to prevent your entire website from losing your Google Page Rank.
- relevant incoming & outgoing links – too many incoming & outgoing links indicate a "popular" website in the eyes of Google’s Search Engine. So Google is cautious wherever it sees an excessive inbound or outbound links. Normally, a web page with about 300 words could safely contain about 2 or 3 links.
- prevent spams from leaving comments on your blogs – you cannot stop trackbacks or you cannot prevent anyone who is linking to your website from their own. However, if your website is linked by webmasters who are black listed, you could lose your page rank.
Verify all the comments on your blog posts & mark the irrelevant ones as "Spam" & delete them immediately.
These are the basic ways to improve & keep you search engine page rank high. Follow these simple rules & your website or blogs page rank will improve. However, Google refreshes & changes its Page Ranking Strategies from time to time.
