CAPTCHA is an intelligent question-response testing method to separate automated responses from human’s ability to notice and answer intelligently. You may have seen CAPTCHA while logging into Yahoo! Chat Rooms! & in many places where you have to prove that you are a human and not a computer program.

CAPTCHA is an abbreviation of Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, and CAPTCHA is copyrighted by Carnegie Mellon University. It was first used by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper (all of Carnegie Mellon University) and John Langford in 2000.

Although CAPTCHA had been successful in the early days to separate humans and computerized automatic programs (bots) but now the technologists at Carnegie Mellon University prefer a more refined version called reCAPTCHA. The most popular uses of either CAPTCHA or reCAPTCHA has been in validating user registrations & logins and in email validations.

Some of the simpler verification methods have been typing in a set of computer generated numbers. In more severe onces, CAPTCHA displays a combination of numbers and shapes and asks the user for a logical interpretation. An example is pointed here where CAPTCHA shows a few shapes (cats in this case) hidden among numbers or alphabets.
