Customizing Blogger Blog - using your own domain name to point to your free Blogspot blog

4 April 2008 12 views No Comment

Blogger makes it very easy to have your Blogger (or Blogspot) blog under your own website domain with the click of a mouse. Unlike in WordPress, you do not need to pay any additional money to redirect your domain name to your new blog! Blogger also redirects your Feeds to your new domain but you do have the option of keeping your feeds separate from your domain too.

.

If you already have a domain, well and good. If not, do not worry. Blogger gives you the option to register your own domain in this process at a nominal cost. However, I suggest that you register your domain separately so that you have more control on your domain name.

.

1. Log into your Blogger account (http://www.blogspot.com)

2. Click on the Settings link for the blog you want to point your domain to.

.

3. Click on the Publishing link (that is usually the second link from the left)

4. Locate the option Switch to: • Custom Domain (Point your own registered domain name to your blog) & click on Custom Domain link.

5. Now you have the option of buying a new domain by paying a nominal fee, or if you already have a domain, click on the Switch to advanced settings link. Should you want to go back to your free hosting at any time, you need to come to this page and click on the link on the top that says: Switch to: • blogspot.com (Blogger’s free hosting service)

6. Now before you do anything, if you already have your own domain registered some where else, you need to change the CNAME record to point to ghs.google.com. This is much like the DNS naming except that you modify the CNAME record with your domain registrar. You could find more documentation on changing the CNAME here.

.

7. Once your have changed your CNAME, come back to your Publishing page on blogger.com (from step 5) and enter your domain name in the advanced setting. And click Save Settings button at the bottom.

8. You are done. It might take a few hours for the new domain to propagate through the entire internet, but you have done all that is required.

.

9. Check your new domain on a browser. Open a browser and type in your domain name. It should take you to your blog on Blogger.com!
