Free Software Directory - Free Softwares from GNU

24 April 2008 7 views No Comment

I am a big proponent of the GNU. One of the lesser known internet directories run by the GNU organization is the Free Software Directory. We all have downloaded trial version, or limited capability free software. The only difference and the biggest differentiator with GNU listed free softwares are that they are truly FREE. There are no small prints which will trail you to any agony!

These softwares are written by creative people and distributed under the GNU licensing, which is really very simple. You can download, distribute, contribute to the software and thus keep is free. Unlike in a lot of situations that I have faced before, where in spite of being called Free, softwares would either have limited abilities or would have some spyware or adware attached to it.

Browse through the Free Software Directory. And as a courtesy, think of some way you can contribute to this voluntary organization that is aspiring for creative freedom. A very simple, inexpensive way to do that would be linking to GNU (even though their online services are not supported by advertisements) and definitely by crediting the right people when you are using the software.

Also, please think of ways to prevent copyright infringement. This is more than a social or technical evil. And unless each and every one of us stand to guard copyrights, there would be breaches.
