New 400 GB Optical Disk from Pioneer - New Blue Ray technology

7 July 2008 50 views No Comment

Pioneer has developed an optical disc that holds 16 times more data than a normal Blue Ray disk. Currently dual-layer 50G byte discs are the highest capacity discs available commercially. TDK previously announced development of a 6-layer disc with 150G byte capacity but that has yet to reach the market.

Currently, a commercial one-sided Blu-rayDisc has 25G bytes of capacity.

Pioneer will share the technical information at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008 that will be held in Hawaii from July 13. The first prototype packs in 16 layers of data into one disk. Each layer holds 25 GB of data on them.

Slight modifications to the current Blu Ray systems will enable them to read the new Pioneer 400 GB disks as well. When commercially available, the new 400 GB disk could hold 48 hours of HD TV programs.
