Video & wireless communications - the success factors for all business
We are all used to seeing ourselves, our friends and relatives use so much of wireless technologies in our day to day life. Talk about kids. “Texting ” or “IM ” (instant messaging) could be new to some of us, but talk to your kids and they would be as good as the Wiki on that!
The advances in wireless and video technologies have been tremendous in the past decade and there is no slowing down now. The reason I combine both these terms together is because while video is a mode of expression, wireless is the means or the vehicle in which it is carried out.
Any business should look into the enormous potential of these two items for success. Let me quote a few data points from the International Association for the Telecommunications Industry (CTIA). In a recently published report , the CTIA shows interesting information on the US market:
- The total number of wireless subscribers grew from about 340,000 in 1985, to about 255,000,000 by 2007. Thats a growth of 750% in 12 years.
- The total market has grown from about US $ 500,000 in 1985 to about US $ 140,000,000 by 2007. Thats a growth of 280%.
- The service providers have reinforced the infrastructure too. From about 900 sites in 1985 it grew to 215,000 by 2007. Thats 237% increase in the number of sites.
Having said that the infrastructure and the market size has grown so much, how has the usage pattern and habit changed from 1985 to 2007? Surprisingly our habit has not changed as much! The same CTIA report shows:
- The average call length was about 2.5 mins in 1985, and stands at slightly over 3 minutes in 2007.
- The average bills have come down drastically. From about US $ 100 a month back in 1985, the average bill in 2007 had been close to US $ 50 a month. And added to that, the providers have invested in infrastructure as well as grown their employee strength over the years. From about 3000 employees in 1985, the US industry now employs over 266,000 employees in 2007.
That is possible because the number of subscribers have grown from slightly over 340,000 in 1985 to over 255,000,000 in 2007. Technological advances brought the operating costs down while the combined revenue went up to over US $150,000,000 by 2007 from over just half a million dollars in 1985.
This is very important if you intend to ride the wave. Your technical platform should be able to work in complete synchronization with the wireless technologies to be able to reach out to the population.
