Here is a quick recap of the parts we have discussed:
- In Part 1 we discussed the best ad agencies to sign up with
- In Part 2 we discussed the highest paying ad formats
.
In this part, Part 3, we will share our experience on ad placements that earn highest click though rates (CTR).
.
Click Though Rates earn revenue for the ads that you display irrespective of whether it is CPM or CPC based. That means, you definitely get to earn if your visitor clicks the ads on your site. Each click earn you advertising revenue. Hence it is very important to have some practical idea on where to place ads so that they are clicked.
.
.
Many ad agencies see placement of the ads very carefully. While the click indicates a sincere interest of the visitor in the advertiser, the ad placement should not be seen as an attempt to deceive the visitor to click them. Google for example, has humans & systems monitoring ad clicks to prevent injustice to the advertisers. Having said that, we will our experience with how effective ad placement could help increase the click rates.
.
Most effective ad placements for higher click rates:
1. Ads in the content area - placing ads in close proximity to the main content of the page allows agencies to serve extremely relevant ads. This automatically boosts the ad hit rates. Google for example, could serve very contextual ads and this allows the serious visitor to explore more options. Having the ad layout (colors, fonts & borders) similar to the page content helps to blend the ad with the content.
.
The maximum earning happens from advertisements placed in the content space.
.
2. Blogs & websites have different layouts and hence effectiveness of ad placements are different for blogs & websites. Since blogs offer a vertical or columnar reading pattern, vertical ads placed next to the main content area have high hit rates.
.
3. For traditional websites, since the reader follows the page from a left to right (for English websites at least), the top right corner is a very effective place for ads.
.
4. Columnar ads on the left side of the page suffer the brunt of ad blindness. But the right columns do not - especially for languages that user a left to right reading pattern (like English). The top columns on the right is the next best place for ads for higher clicks.
.
5. Reader interaction area - blogs for example have a Comments section where the visitor could comment on your post or simply share their thoughts. Since this area receives very high attention from engaged readers, this is one place where ads have received high hits.
.
Though clicks would earn you money, you should not over do with ads. Too many ads take away the readers attention. Too many image ads distract the reader with colors. The ones that are specially distracting are the odd colored moving gif images. While your website picks up ad revenues, you would like to eliminate, or at least restrict such distracting ads.
