Yahoo! making the big leap with Web 2.0 - Yahoo! & the new Social Media

10 May 2008 101 views No Comment

Ari Balogh, Yahoo! CTO shared his visions of Yahoo! transformation in the coming years at the Web 2.0 Expo held on 25th April 2008. There are so many social problems associated with social media. Apart from the well publicized issues of security, privacy & protection of the minors, the impact is much worse in countries that are still learning to get “social”, that is, electronically.
.
While Yahoo! wants to transform Social Media, it joins the fray along with the likes of the already popular networks of MySpace, Facebook & the like. With the introduction of MySpace, Facebook & Bebo, The Internet Social Media has gained popularity in leaps & bounds. How does the landscape look today?

Most Popular Social Media networks in US, Europe, Latin America & Asia Pacific

One aspect of Social Networking has been Chat Rooms. Yahoo! runs some of the most popular chat rooms. They are all plagued by pornographic bots, scammers & sexual predators. The cloak of anonymity has been exploited to an extent where chat conversations are no longer a pleasure, not advisable.

.

Both AOL & MSN have been able to bring some discipline in regulating these chat rooms, but Yahoo!’s chat rooms look far from enviable! The large number of online users that Yahoo! claims to have may reduce to as much as to 20% if you eliminated all the duplicate IDs have people have created! Yahoo! strengthened security by enforcing CAPTCHA logins but that seem to have taken little effect.

Yahoo! apparently wishes to reap the benefits of a large developer community by opening up it’s technical development infrastructure to the world. Already there are millions of small time developers developing small applications based on APIs that Yahoo! has opened up for them. As Ari Balogh points out, Flickr is one of the examples that Yahoo! could showcase where applications developed by various developers across the world could be put to use.
